London Wing Chun: Sil Lim Tao
Sil Lim Tao: Great Achievements Start From Little Ideas
Sil Lim Tao is the first form of the Wing Chun system. It is where every Wing Chun student begins to learn the foundations of Wing Chun theory and practice. As you will see in the video below, unlike the subsequent Wing Chun forms, the student remains in a stationary stance throughout performing Sil Lim Tao. This is because Sil Lim Tao was specifically developed to introduce Wing Chun students to the most fundamental elements of Wing Chun. This is not to say that Sil Lim Tao is a simple or basic form, far from it, all Wing Chun students continually return to Sil Lum Tao throughout their training as they uncover its subtle complexities.
Below is a video of Sifu Austin Goh demonstrating Sil Lim Tao, in the video he shows a harder application of Sil Lim Tao incorporating Chi Kung breathing. Sifu Goh also shows just a few of the many practical applications of Sil Lim Tao:
From practicing Sil Lim Tao, new students are familiarised with the principles of Wing Chun centreline theory, learn Wing Chun defence and attack techniques, and build essential muscle structures through the training of the goat stance. Sil Lim Tao, is a form which can be practised at varying levels of intensity. Beginner level students will be taught to practice Sil Lim Tao with muscles relaxed and the mind cleared. This in turn helps to train relaxation and concentration during sparring and chi sau.
